Salt Pier – Bonaire3

Night Dive in Bonaire: My First Underwater Adventure After Dark

Some experiences stay with you forever, and this one has always been vivid in my memory. It happened in Bonaire, at the famous Salt Pier — my first ever night dive.

I remember feeling nervous as I slipped into the water. The ocean at night is different. It’s almost otherworldly. Darkness surrounds you, and your light becomes the only guide. Everything looks familiar yet completely alien. I was scared… but I was with my dad, so I knew I’d be okay.

As soon as we descended, the underwater world came alive in a way I had never imagined. Most of the fish were sleeping, tucked away in the shadows. But the hunters of the night were out: crabs scuttled across the sand, eels peeked from their holes, and octopuses slinked through the darkness, hunting quietly. Even the pufferfish had built a tiny sleeping ball of mucus, floating in the gentle current.

And then… there was the boxfish.

It swam straight toward me, puckering its little lips, and started “kissing” my finger. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve never touched marine life — and I still don’t — but in that moment, it was as if this tiny creature had made a decision to come meet me. I laughed and giggled uncontrollably, completely enchanted. The randomness of it, the intimacy of that tiny interaction in the dark ocean, was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.

That night, I realized that diving at night wasn’t just different — it was transformative. The darkness forced you to focus, to slow down, and to notice the little details that daylight sometimes hides. Every flicker of light, every tiny movement, became something special. And somehow, in that darkness, a tiny boxfish made me feel like I was part of its world.

It’s moments like these — unexpected, tender, and magical — that remind me why I fell in love with diving in the first place.
